LONG BEACH (GG) — Firefighter Class 212 of the Mississippi State Fire Academy is making a difference and twenty-seven (27) members graduated from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I-II course held at the Mississippi State Fire Academy in Jackson, Miss.  Three of those members happened to be from the Long Beach Fire Department:  Patrick Gaddy, Brandon Sumrall, Brian Sumrall.

“They just completed 7 weeks of basic training and will leave there as certified Firefighters,” said Long Beach Fire Chief Griff Skellie.  “They will use this training throughout their career.  We are very proud of these three men and look forward to watching them succeed in their careers.”

This intense seven-week course includes online, classroom, and hands-on instruction in the areas of fire behavior, fire suppression, rescue, incident command, hazardous materials, and other fire related topics. This course meets and exceeds the National Fire Protection Association for Firefighter Qualifications and the uniform minimum training standards stated in the Mississippi Code section 45-11-7.

The Mississippi State Fire Academy is a division of the Mississippi Insurance Department. State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney and Academy Executive Director Kelly Elliott believe these firefighters will be an asset to the fire departments they represent. “We are confident the immediate impact and positive difference these firefighters will make, not only within their departments but also in their communities, will truly be substantial.” said Director Elliott.

Additionally, the Mississippi State Fire Academy (MSFA) is celebrating 50 years of training firefighters and saving lives and property.  MSFA is located just outside the capital City of Jackson in Rankin County, Mississippi, on one hundred-twelve acres. MSFA began in 1974 with James S. Hart Jr. as the Executive Director traveling the state and operating out of his pickup truck. In March 1975, a groundbreaking ceremony was held where the Administration Building now stands.

Kelly Elliott currently serves as the 6th Executive Director, “The Mississippi State Fire Academy reflects the dedication, skill, and passion of the people who have contributed to its growth over the years. From instructors to support staff, each individual has played a vital role in shaping not only our state’s fire service but also a legacy of excellence that extends far beyond. As we celebrate 50 years, we honor the work that has saved lives, protected communities, and ensured our firefighters are always ready to answer the call—Making a Difference When It Matters the Most.”

The mission of the MSFA is to serve the Mississippi fire service community and the world by providing quality education and training in fundamental and advanced skills to save life and property. MSFA is a subdivision of the Mississippi Insurance Department and falls under the leadership of Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney.

“The Mississippi State Fire Academy is one of, if not, the best firefighter training academies in the world. For 50 years, men and women have come in, given their all, and returned to their communities to serve others. The dangers of firefighting can never be completely removed. It is a very dangerous occupation. Good training, knowledge, and skills can help a firefighter survive the physical dangers of the job. The training the State Fire Academy offers continues to be the most up-to-date and advanced and I look forward to another 50 years of exceptional service,” says Chaney.
