MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST (GG) — Officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) announced Wednesday, August 28, 2024 that the recreational fishing season for Greater Amberjack and Gag will open in Mississippi territorial waters on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at 12:01 a.m. local time. Additionally, the MDMR state government agency stated that Gag will only be available from Sunday, September 1 until close September 16, 2024, at 12:01 a.m. local time.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), through its Beach Monitoring Program, has issued a beach water contact advisory for Gulfport West Beach. The beach is not closed; however, there may be an increased risk of illness associated with swimming in this area. When water samples show that bacteria levels are safe for contact, the advisory will be lifted.
The ADVISORY has been ISSUED for:
- Gulfport Beach — the affected area is from Marie Ave. to Camp Ave. (Station 8)
Swimmers are reminded that the Beach Task Force has a standing recommendation that swimming should not occur during or within 24 hours of significant rainfall.
