PASS CHRISTIAN (GG) — Pass Christian Elementary 1st Graders explore Life Cycles through Egg & Butterfly Hatching Project this spring. Students in Lauren Williamson’s class at Pass Christian Elementary School (PCES) are getting an up-close and personal look at the wonders of life science as they embark on an exciting, hands-on project: hatching chicken eggs and observing the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies. The engaging unit lesson is part of the students’ science curriculum on animal needs and life cycles.
The project began with a visit from Dennis Alley, a local chicken farmer, who delivered eggs and an incubator. He taught the students about the chicken life cycle, incubation, and chick care while the students took notes using a graphic organizer to record key facts and deepen their understanding.
In addition to observing chick development, the class will also raise caterpillars and watch their metamorphosis into butterflies. These parallel experiences allow students to compare and contrast different life cycles.
This unit will culminate in an informational writing project where students will compile their research, observations, and new vocabulary into structured reports. The goal is to reinforce science concepts while building writing, critical thinking, and presentation skills.
Pass Christian Elementary School (PCES) is a member of the Pass Christian Public School District (PCPSD).
