GULFPORT (GG) — Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport (NCBC) officially opened the newly renovated Colmer Dining Facility during a ribbon-cutting ceremony May 29, marking the completion of a multi-million-dollar modernization project designed to enhance food service quality, readiness and quality of life for service members assigned to the installation.

NCBC Gulfport is one of only two Navy installations selected to pilot the Commander, Navy Installations Command Shore Food Service Transformation initiative.

The renovated “campus-style” facility includes updated serving stations, expanded seating and a redesigned layout capable of accommodating up to 495 diners. The project is part of the Navy’s broader food service transformation initiative focused on improving nutrition, wellness and overall warfighter readiness.

“Warfighter readiness is inextricably linked to the quality of service and support we provide from the shore,” said Vice Admiral Scott Gray, commander of Navy Installations Command. “By providing our Sailors with high-quality, nutritious food and top-tier wellness resources, we are directly investing in their physical and mental resilience.”

The updated menu offerings were developed using direct feedback from Sailors assigned to NCBC Gulfport during a live taste-testing event held earlier this year. Following the event, culinary specialists assigned to the installation participated in advanced culinary training focused on preparation techniques, flavor development and presentation.

“Our average customer is about the age of a typical college student, and we’re trying to retain the best talent in the military,” said Captain Ana I. Franco, commanding officer of NCBC Gulfport. “This program helps create a place where service members are excited to come eat and spend time.”
