BILOXI (GG) — The annual Juneteenth Celebration is set to take place on Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20, at John Henry Beck Park, 671 Division St., and the Biloxi Town Green, 710 Beach Blvd. The celebration is open to all ages, with and without disabilities, and will feature a variety of family-friendly activities throughout the weekend.
Events include an essay contest for ages 11-18, with submissions due by Friday, June 12, and a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at John Henry Beck Park. The tournament is open to teams of three to five players, with a $25 entry fee per team.
Saturday’s festivities will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Biloxi Town Green and will include live entertainment, food and vendor booths, a children’s area, and more. Admission to the Saturday event is free. Those interested in participating as vendors for Saturday’s event must submit a vendor application by Wednesday, June 17. Vendor opportunities are available for food, arts and crafts, pottery, jewelry, paintings, and other specialty items.
Juneteenth commemorates the 1865 announcement in Galveston, Texas, declaring freedom for enslaved African Americans. The holiday celebrates freedom, education, culture, and unity. The Juneteenth Celebration Weekend is hosted by the City of Biloxi Parks & Recreation Department and the Movers and Shakers Social Club Inc.
