PASS CHRISTIAN (GG) — On Monday, October 21, 2024, the Pass Christian Fire Department (PCFD) recognized Gavin Carter as the 2024 Firefighter of the Year.
Carter has been in the Fire Service for 5 years, having started his career at Diamondhead Fire Department at the age of 20 and has been with the PCFD since October 2020. During that time, he has filled the role of Firefighter, and Driver Operator on C Shift.
Due to changes in leadership within the department, Carter became the senior Firefighter on his shift, (6 months ago), by becoming an “Acting Lieutenant,” and then immediately began filling the Captain’s role. The role of Shift Captain is a senior and more seasoned position within the fire service, and one that usually takes a Firefighter about 10-12 years to get.
While as an “Acting Lieutenant,” Gavin has demonstrated exceptional leadership, maturity, professionalism, and dedication since stepping up to lead C shift. With commitment to the role and tireless efforts, Carter has guided his team through two mutual aid fires and a storm activation, handling high-pressure situations with composure and tactical expertise.
In addition to these significant events, Gavin has consistently managed the day-to-day responsibilities of a Fire Officer, ensuring the smooth operation of his shift while still managing calls for service and handling all administrative tasks.
Carter’s ability to lead by example, maintain team morale, and execute duties with precision, make him an outstanding candidate for Firefighter of the Year.
