In downtown Biloxi, just a half a block South of Biloxi City Hall is a little family-owned and operated Deli basically the size of a closet, but has the heart of the coliseum.
This Deli, which sits on the corner of Water and LaMeuse, has been a mainstay for the lunch crowd for the better part of 27 years. From Monday through Friday business men and women file up to the counter and put the first half of their tedious day to bed with some of the best comfort food around. Each day is adorned with the daily special that hasn’t changed in over two decades.
To shed away a case of the Mondays, patrons can always expect a heap of spaghetti with a tangy meat sauce. On Tuesday, a crowd favorite is the MS Gulf Coast quintessential red beans and rice. Wednesday plays host to a large roast beef Po-Boy that is smothered in a savory gravy. By Thursday, if you haven’t gone into a coma from all the good eatin’, you can get a large Turkey Po-Boy dressed all the way. Friday rounds it out with my favorite, the Large BBQ Beef Po-Boy.
If you aren’t in the mood for the daily special, you can order an assortment of sandwiches and Poboys like Ham, Tuna Salad, Chicken Salad, Egg Salad or the traditional club. You can also get a BLT or Grilled cheese for the folks on a serious budget.
The spot also offers up a healthy portion of a chef salad adorned with tons of toppings.
Now that I have gotten the food part out of the way, I want to talk about the staff. Every day, it’s the same smiling faces. If you show up more than a few times, they will remember your face. If you show up a few more, they might even learn your name and your usual. It is one of the last vestiges of that old country small town feeling that everyone has come to look back on with nostalgia. Sometimes I go here not because I can get full for well under $10 at lunch with a delicious lunch, but because like the song says…sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came.
