The Our Lady Academy Crescents on Sunday won their sixth consecutive title over Resurrection Catholic in straight sets, 25-17, 25-16 & 25-17.

The Crescents won the state’s last overall title in 2002 and then the first Class I title in 2003. They took a couple of years off, as Bay High won the title in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina dealt them an extra hand of bad luck in 2005.

However, in 2006 they started another streak of four in a row from 2006-09. Another adjustment with the state adding a third classification and new school’s opening in Desoto County kept them off balance in 2010 and 2011.

But, then the streak resumed in 2012 and has remained intact since.

The Crescents have won their division every year since 2000 and have played in the state finals from 2001-03 and 2006-17.

“In the past few years, Mississippi Volleyball has picked up,” said Head Coach Myers. “We have had great players in the past decade, though.”

Decorated player Emma Funk recorded 22 kills with 15 points and Rebecca Walk notched 26 kills with 8 points. Senior Hannah Gest completed her career with 40 assists to polish a 34-4 record.

Senior Cassidy Ketchum dug deeper to bring the title back to Bay St. Louis. Senior Taylor Santiago took advantage of each shot that came her way while Gest set OLA up for the kill shot and the title.
